Our love for the environment & ecology, underpins everything we do here at Herons Rise.

From our choice of biodegradable, organic, free-trade coffee pods, through to the toiletries we provide in both cottages, we have try to be mindful of the environmental footprint of our cottages and our business.

We try to live simple and sustainable lives ourselves - we grow much of our own food ourselves in our large productive veggie garden. We keep bees for their honey and raise chooks for their eggs and we have tried to incorporate this philosophy into our cottages too without skimping on quality or comfort.

To date, all the heating for both our homes and our cottages has been achieved with wood sustainably harvested from the property. The Studio has solar hot water, which is boosted during the colder months with additional heating provided by the slow combustion fire that turns the studio into a really cosy space on winter nights. All the water to both our homes and the cottages is pure rainwater collected  from the roofs of the buildings. This means that when you take a shower in the Studio and Wine Loft, you are probably enjoying the most environmentally friendly wash you’ve taken in a while!

We sort all rubbish generated here into recycling bins before we transport this ourselves to the local waste management facility. We also compost any organic food waste (not meat or fish) and this compost is used in our veggie garden. By doing this, we are able to dramatically reduce the amount of waste from our corner of the world that ends up in landfill. We provide compost bins and recycling bags in the cottages to help you to make this easier for us to do.

If you choose to have breakfast provisions, we supply eggs from our own chickens (when possible -  the girls are a little lazy about laying in winter!) and honey from own hives. Where possible, we source locally produced fruit and yoghurt. We are also attempting to produce wine without using the traditional chemicals used in most vineyards - watch this space…

While we are fastidious about cleanliness and hygiene in the cottages, we do all our cleaning with environmentally friendly products. This is especially important for us, as all grey water generated is naturally treated on-site.

We see ourselves as temporary custodians of this beautiful corner of the world and do our best to make sure that it will be handed on to future custodians in as good a state as we can manage.
